The term "Arabic letters" denotes the number of Arabic letters in the specified region, i.e. the verse or portion of the verse. Each letter, in Arabic, has a corresponding numerical value, which is similar to the Roman numeral system (I = 1, II = 2, V = 5, X = 10, etc.).
